January 2013 - AZ
January 28 - 31, 2013
Thursday, January 31. Well, January sure did fly right by. Yesterday didn't seem like a Friday to me as they usually do because I agreed to work Friday for a coworker. I'm not looking forward to it as we have about sixty rigs scheduled to come in and only 2 "experienced" receptionists scheduled to work. It's going to be a fun one.

I started working on our taxes today and I sure hope that I'm missing something because its it looking good. How can I go from breaking even last year to owing over $2,000 this year? I was so upset at the outcome that I had to walk away. Hopefully, it is because of this senior brain that I have.

We got a darling photo of Charlotte today, check it out.

Thursday, January 24. I got the word on Monday that my cousin's husband, Joe passed away yesterday, surrounded by his loving family. He was a great man and most people will have fond memories of him and he will certainly be missed.

On Tuesday evening, Mike's long-time childhood friend, Jim arrived from Virginia for a visit of a couple of days. Chris and Norm came by, as he was another guy that grew up in their neck of the woods. And we also got an unexpected visit from another Wisconsin couple, Pat and Roger. We had a great time catching up on the past couple of years (since their last class reunion).

Before I headed to work yesterday, I heard from Pat that they would have to put their 12+ year old dog, Lucky down. What a sad day for their family. RIP, dear Lucky.

Mike and Jim headed toward Gila Bend to explore the Painted Rocks Petroglyph site and had hoped to see the Casa Grande Ruins but the door was locked for the day just as they arrived.

Again, we enjoyed Jim's company and had a nice dinner together and there was certainly no lack of stories to be told and memories to catch up on.

This morning, while I took Frisco for his walk, Jim worked out at our club house. I managed to catch up with the ladies that were out walking and that felt really good once again. I've been kind of missing my Highland friends - it seems that we are so busy doing other things these days.

I had a haircut appointment, so when I got back home we headed over to Waldo's BBQ for some lunch. We haven't been there before but have heard good things about it. We will probably go back there again. After lunch, Jim said goodbye and headed down the road again to spend a few more days with his sister and her husband in Benson.

Sunday, January 27. We have had 2 long days of rain and it has been pouring down, steady rain. The low areas of the yard are small lakes. As I was walking Frisco, I noticed that our neighbor's 3rd Saguaro cactus has fallen over, fortunately not on her house. Last October, a 30+ foot crested Saguaro fell and shortly after that, she had a 2nd one removed because it appeared to be compromised. It surprises me to see how little the roots are and its no wonder they just topple over when they get soggy.

Somehow, I have lost my entries from early January. Here are some reflections for those 3 weeks:

I know that I spent some time grieving, as memories of our Grandson, Owen were refreshed near the anniversary of his loss, January 9, 2010. I think of him often, but certain times are more difficult. He would be celebrating his third birthday this year and I have only to look at my niece and nephews children, Lincoln and Olivia, that were born about this time that year and how they are growing up and developing. Here's a little poem that I found that kind of touches my heart:

How quietly he tiptoed into our world,

Softly, only a moment he stayed,

But what an imprint he left upon our hearts.

On the 14th, I remembered Marty, a good friend who lived a life of hard breaks. During a time in her life when she had happiness with her long-time partner, Jonnie, loved where she was living in Florida, was united with siblings and an aunt that she never knew she had, and then was struck with a horrible form of cancer, Ovarian. She suffered terribly her last 2 years of life with surgeries, treatments, obstructions, and just plain feeling terrible. I will always remember her as a scrappy little gal who loved her truck, Nascar, wolves, having beers, and 1970 and 80s music.

Then on the 20th, my cousin Donna's husband Joe passed away at age 83. He lived a pretty long and happy life and was active and enjoying cooking his pasta right up to the end. Rest in Peace, Joe.
