Running Down Our Dream

June 2007
June 1 - 3
Friday, June 1. Happy Birthday, Savana! I started the day with my stretching regime and a 20 minute walk - gotta keep doing that. I seem to slack off and then start feeling sluggish.

Its back to work day for us - the park is nearly full - a Jehovah's Witness convention is going on this weekend. I was able to close at 5:00 because of less than 10 arrivals this evening - Yeah!!

We got word yesterday that Nan and Dale are coming for a visit on the 21st of this month. Looking forward to being tour guides once again. Seems like every time we do that, we find new and interesting places to visit. Also expecting Savana to come for a couple of weeks this summer.

Saturday, June 2. Ben dropped Ruby off this morning, as they have a busy weekend with friend's wedding. It is another cold, gray, misty day. Sure do get tired of it. I made a reservation to get out of here next week, but haven't gotten a confirmation yet. Hope there is availability.
June 4 - 10
Monday, June 4. Today is day 4 of our workweek - YEAH!! I have a split shift today, so my coffee time will be interrupted. This is also Mike's last day of working maintenance, he will be joining me in the office.

We were planning on getting away from this place this week, but it looks like there are too much unfinished business - especially with the Suzuki. We are still waiting to hear back from Augie in Hawaii.

Today turned out to be a beautiful, sunny, warm day. It has been a while since we've had one - I think since the 23rd - could that be?

I spoke too soon about the weather. By 3:00 this afternoon, the wind was gusting and nearly blew the door off the hinges. It continued throughout the day and well into the night, keeping us awake through the night. I'm not sure when it stopped, but it was sunny and quiet when I woke up the next morning.

Saturday, June 9. Guess I haven't been too good about writing this week. We decided against taking off for the week, so ended up doing things in the area. The Honda is now registered in California. No word from Augie in Hawaii, but another Hawaiian resident expressed an interest and came to see it, as he is currently working in the area. Guess its a good car for over there.

On Wednesday, we had lunch, browsed an antique shop, and went to the Farmer's Market at Rockaway Beach, a quaint little area of Pacific that houses motels, galleries, restaurants, and a protected beach area.

Thursday was vehicle cleaning day, as it was nice and sunny and low winds. In the afternoon, I went to Sublime to get a haircut from Jill. I've been transitioning from short-short to not so short and its been frustrating. I felt a little better after this cut.

Yesterday, we took Dad's coins to a dealer that we met at the antique store and found that we have nothing of great value - face value only. That was kind of disappointing.

From there we went to Half Moon Bay where we window shopped, then stopped at Sam's Chowder House for a wonderful bowl of chowder and an enjoyable lunch. Ben joined us for dinner in the evening and we had a nice visit with him.

Sunday, June 10. Since our workday doesn't start until 11:30, there was plenty of time to catch up on phone calls this morning. Had a nice visit with Randy and Pat Hoovey. Mike talked to Mom too.

It's kind of fun working with Mike - feels comfortable and I think its going to work. He certainly feels better, not having to deal with other people's dirt and trash.

After work, we stopped by Adrienne's vintage 1970's motorhome to help her with a stuck gas pedal. She is trying to sell it but since it has been sitting in the same place for 2 years, it has built up a very thick layer of rust. He sprayed it with lubricant but doesn't have a real good feeling about getting it to free up. As we walked back home, we stopped to chat with Cheryl and Frank, a couple from Canada that we met here in October.
June 11 - 17
Wednesday, June 13. Finally, something to write about. After doing laundry and getting groceries this morning, we disconnected the Bravo and headed north to the Duncans Mills Camping Club on the Russian River, about 2 hours north of SF. The new tires really make a difference - the ride seems much more stable and Mike says he has better control.

Once we turned west off US101, the countryside was beautiful - redwoods and pines, wineries and farms along the banks of the Russian River. The campground is located behind the historic railroad depot in a quaint little community.

Once we got settled in, we walked to the general store for milk and ice (gotta forget at least one thing, right). Then we just enjoyed the unusual natural surroundings, watching and listening to the hustle and bustle of birds, bees, and butterflies.

The grill came out and we started our vacation dinners with grilled tuna steaks, a nice salad, and rice. A very enjoyable evening.

Once again, we are disconnected with no phone/internet service because of the rural area. The park has wireless for a fee, so we couldn't resist the temptation.

Thursday, June 14. What a beautiful day. After a relaxing start and our morning coffee, we went for a walk through the park and along the river. Then came back and had bacon and pancakes for breakfast. We're doing most of our cooking on the new grill, since we haven't had too many opportunities in Pacifica - its usually too cold or too windy or we're too something or other. But it is working well. The bacon turned out crispy and flavorful.

The afternoon was spent relaxing, reading, and just enjoying the outdoors. We have seen many different birds including hummingbirds enjoying the nectar of the berry bushes that surround us. This morning a young rabbit came bouncing through our site and this evening a cute quail ran through.

For dinner, we did baby back ribs with a dry rub seasoning on the Holland grill. They turned out just perfect - I think we're getting the hang of it.

After dinner, we went to the spa and had a nice conversation with one of the locals. It was the perfect end to a beautiful day.

Friday, June 15. Another wonderful day - its just so relaxing and pretty around here. We walked around the little community this morning, checking out some of the antique shops and galleries, not much else other than the Cape Fear Cafe.

This afternoon, we thought we would take kayaks out and paddle around on the river. The wind was so strong that we could hardly get to the opposite side of the river. Needless to say, that didn't last long.

We tested the Holland Grill again this evening when Mike cooked chicken breast. Once again, it turned out delicious; tender, juicy, crispy outside, and great flavor.

Saturday, June 16. Darn, we gotta go back to the fog and the jobs. Oh well, only 3 months to go - the time sure has been flying by. After taking a nice, long walk around the park, we headed south. The trip was uneventful, traffic wasn't bad, and there was only one mishap along the way.

As we approached the Golden Gate Bridge, in the far right (truck and RV) lane, Mike got a little too close and scraped the curb on the bridge. It was a little scary and we're glad that he didn't lose control or that we didn't have a flat tire because of it. Check out the damage on the photo journal.

The boss had a meeting this evening and furnished pizza to the troops. We also got to hear Adrienne's story of her new motorhome, a 1984 Southwind Class A. After the meeting, we all trooped down to her site to take a look - not bad.

Sunday, June 17. Today is Father's Day and Mike heard from both of our sons this morning. Made his day. It was also back to work day and all went well with that.

Ben and Jill arrived when we got off work and we had some burgers on the grill and just enjoyed their company, sitting around and talking. It was another of those beautiful days in the mid 60s.

June 18 - 24
Monday, June 18. I had a nice conversation with Rita this morning, then it was just another regular kind of day at work. This evening, Ben and Jill took us to the Presidio Social Club restaurant for dinner to celebrate Father's Day (I thought thats what we did yesterday, but this was really special). It is a new, upscale restaurant located in the Presidio set in a historic barracks building a century old. They serve classic American dishes.

The following is the description from their website: Complementing its airy, window-filled structure, the interior tastefully exudes a retro-40s/50s decor with a hint of modern style, demonstrated by old medicine cabinets showcasing liquors behind the bar, stainless steel ceiling fans, and a massive L-shaped marble bar running almost the full length of the dining room.

I forgot to write about our lastest pet, Freddy, the red and turquoise betta fish. Mike spotted a nice bowl at a thrift store a couple of weeks ago, I dug out my shell collection, and he has a nice spot on the dinette table (checkout his picture in the photo journal). He's become real lively whenever we sit at the table and seems to like his feeding regimen and music. Unfortunately, we can't take him out for a walk around the park to socialize.

Wednesday, June 20. Day 4 of 4 on and we survived another shift working together. Actually, its kind of nice.

The good news today is that the Suzuki might be sold. A fellow from Nevada is coming tomorrow, cash in hand - no negotiating on the price, and ready to drive it away from here. We've definitely got our finger crossed on this one. Please send positive thoughts our way.

Thursday, June 21. It was a busy day. I had my annual mammogram this morning while Mike did the laundry and worked on getting the Suzuki ready to be picked up.

Nan and Dale arrived at about 1:00 and we picked them up at the airport, came back here and had shrimp *bleep*tail and artichokes. While we were doing that, the guy showed up to look at the Suzuki.

Quite an adventure that was. Mike was showing him the manual, assorted receipts, and the clear title. They got busy doing something and he placed the book on top of the car. The guys took off to test drive it and Mike thought that he left the book on top of the car. In a panic, he headed down the road to see if he could find either the car or the book on the side of the road - fortunately, it was a calm day. When the guy got back, we found out that he had put it inside the car before driving off. We signed the title, exchanged the money, and off he drove back to Nevada.

Later in the evening, Ben and Ruby came over to see Nan and Dale and to have dinner with us. Nan wasn't feeling real good, so they headed back to their motel and Ben hung around for a while.

Friday, June 22. Today we went on a tour of the Sonoma Valley Wine Country with AM/PM Tours. Manuel, the drive and tour guide, did a wonderful job. We first went to the Sebastiani Winery, then stopped for lunch and exploring the historic Sonoma Plaza. We toured the barracks building where we saw the original California flag, the mission, and a few trinket shops and art galleries.

After that, we went to the Ledson Winery, housed in a beautiful mansion fashioned after a French castle that cost $72,000,000,000 back in 1995. It was built as the personal home of the Ledson family but it drew so much interest from the people driving by the place, they were constantly bothered by people thinking that it was a winery that was open to the public. Eventually, they couldn't stand it any longer and moved out of the house and made it into a winery that was open to the public.

Our final winery was the Viansa Winery, formed by the youngest son of the Sebastiani family, who split off from the family business because he wanted to expand the business and change the way it was operated. His business now exceeds that of the family and his name no longer appears on the family tree.

Saturday, June 23. What an exciting morning! There was a message from Rita on my phone 1st thing this morning, so I called her right away. Her news was that Christel and her boyfriend announced yesterday that they are expecting a baby. It was very surprising and exciting news, since it will be the 1st grandchild for Rita and Denny and the start of a new generation for our family. CONGRATULATIONS, Stella and Josh!

We picked Nan and Dale up at about 10:00 and headed for Twin Peaks, our favorite place to start when showing people around the city. We got there and found that the opening ceremonies for the "Pride Not Prejudice" celebration were going on, the beginning of the annual gay pride weekend. Local dignitaries and GLBT activists were speaking and there was a giant pink triangle attached to the hill to signify persecution of these people.

The city was bustling with people but we did manage to find parking in the financial, Union Square district so we spent some time there. Chinatown was our next destination and we just happened to find a great parking spot there. After that, we headed to Fort Point for a spectacular view of the Golden Gate Bridge. We meandered through the Presidio and Golden Gate Park, ending up at the Beach Cafe, where we met up with Ben for a c*!ktail. We had dinner at our house this evening.

Sunday, June 24. Today, we decided to show Nan and Dale some of the coastline south of here, along Highway 1. We stopped for gas in Half Moon Bay and then drove down to Pigeon Point Lighthouse, where we strolled around the grounds. It was another beautiful day. I don't think our guests believe that there is a lot of fog around here, since everyday during their visit has been sunny and near 70. We found a path to a sheltered beach where it was beautiful, so we spent some time scrounging for shells and wildlife. Found some anemone but not much else.

From there, we headed to Pescadero where we checked out some of the quaint little shops, then on to Duarte's Tavern where we had a drink and some lunch. When we left there, we drove the Stage Road, a narrow winding road that took us up into the mountain. Along the way, we saw beautiful views and some rather strange metal sculptures (see photo).

Its been great fun, hanging out with Nan and Dale, exploring the area around here. We were all kind of tired when we got back, so called it an early night.
June 25 - July 1
Monday, June 25. Back to work for us and I was called in a bit early. Its getting really busy around here - must have been 20+ check-ins today in addition to the late arrivals from yesterday. It still slows down a bit in the middle of the week but we are filling up.

Nan and Dale think we are just telling stories about the awful cold and foggy weather. They're not convinced since it has been beautiful their entire stay. Today, they went on a tour of Alcatraz and Angel Island, then spent time at the wharf. The came back loaded with shrimp, scallops, and sourdough bread for dinner. We're glad they are having such a good time.

Tuesday, June 26. It was a normal work day for us. Nan and Dale joined us after work and we headed to Ben's house while we waited to get into the Pacific Cafe to celebrate their 3rd anniversary. As usual, the dinner was delicious. The place has the best food and is so unpretentious. The Parmesan crusted halibut is one of our favorites.

Wednesday, June 27. We took Nan and Dale to the airport this morning, then off to work for us. It was a busy day and we ended up staying open until 6:00, as we had several of our reservations not in yet at 5:00. We also had trouble balancing at the end of the day, so it was close to 7:00 when we got home. We're tired!

Saturday, June 30. Yesterday, I was asked to work the morning shift and after being there until close to 8:00 the night before, I was exhausted. Needless to say, we spent the rest of the day just relaxing. It was one of those cold, foggy days - didn't get warmer than 55 all day and clouds of fog just rolled through.

Today was much better and after a late start, we did laundry and cleaned up the house. We wanted to get the car washed, but just didn't get around to it.

Sunday, July 1. During the night, while rolling over, I felt a stabbing pain in my right shoulder - must have pulled a muscle. So the morning started out with Advil, stretches, and applying heat. It felt much better after a couple of hours.

We got the windows on the motorhome and the car washed - they get so dirty in this place, especially on those foggy, windy days. After that, we took a drive to Berkeley to the flea market. It was kind of a bust, but we did get to see the University area. Traffic was backed way up along the Bay Bridge, so instead we drove south to the San Mateo Bridge and took a little tour around the bay.

This evening we grilled some chicken tenders and potatoes for dinner and then watched the movie, "Wild Hogs". It was kind of silly but we got some good laughs and thats always nice.
